I would counter that metaphor of an organism is still valid, like in any society there will be many different types of organisms. Better metaphor is a pluralistic framework that as a system is probabilistically deterministic but riddled with random actions. My own preference for such a ecology has been "Implicate Order". One of the prime characteristic of this system is that it has experienced Cartesian Dilemma, so object oriented and such approaches are no more applicable. There are many more intesting things to happen here including "Synchronicity" - and the transformation will be acutely Generative Order driven and study of system of systems will be more relevant where knowledge formation will be non formal, although the ontology itself is a formal construct :)
